On September 12, 2024, a Genoa low came over southwestern Poland bringing torrential rainfall. In 5 days, as much water fell on the mountainous region of the Klodzko Basin as usually falls for 6 months. The downpours caused a gigantic flood. At noon on Sunday, September 15, the dam at the Stronie Śląskie reservoir broke. The damage caused a wave that in its path destroyed the tourist town of Stronie Slaskie and Poland's oldest spa town, Ladek Zdroj, whose history dates back to 1498. Not only were residential, service and public buildings ruined, but also the technical infrastructure. The losses caused by the cataclysm were initially estimated at 50 billion zlotys. Reconstruction of such massive damage may take several years. Rational solutions that take into account climate change and educate people are needed, among other things.
