In rural Nepal, a majority of families living there survive and provide for their families by gathering produce from the self-maintained farms. This itself is a strenuous task, so to do so with a psychical disability makes it an even more harrowing task to live life normally.
Fourteen years ago, for local farmer Harichandra Sunuwar (aged 60 presently), this nightmarish scenario became a reality after a life-altering accident that left him with most of his body paralysed. Since the accident, he is left with the ability only to move one of his hands slightly.
Harichandra's family owns a tiny house on a very steep slope in the Change cluster in the Taplejung district in Nepal, so it is a challenge to reach his home and even more so when his accident occurred 14 years ago, with no roads or vehicles available. To transport Harichandra, locals had to carry him via a stretcher for a gruelling 7 hours to reach the nearest hospital. After a tremendous effort from family and friends, he received the heartbreaking news that he couldn't get the treatment he so desperately required.
Since this devastating accident, Harichandra spends most of his days in a dark room, sometimes without going outdoors for days on end because for his fragile wife Devi and young son Anis, to move his paralysed body is an enormous challenge. Having no wheelchair or an accessible home doesn't help their constant struggle either.
Despite having diabetes Devi and Anis being only 16 years old have both dedicated their lives to making Harichandra's as comfortable as they possibly can. As Devi is no longer capable of working due to her diabetes, Anis has become the sole provider for his family, bringing in both income as well as taking care of and maintaining the family home.
Hearing his story, along with others, broke our hearts, so we have managed to organise a wheelchair as well as reach out to technicians who could alter his home. With your kind donations, we could change Harichandra's life by getting him the right wheelchair (specific to his medical needs) and make his home disable friendly. Not only would it significantly improve the quality of his life, but his family too.
If, like us, you wish to save another person's life by donating, or if you'd just like to ask us anything at all about Harichandra's story, please feel free to email - [email protected]
or visit our Facebook/Instagram - "Human Practice Foundation."
Thank you for taking the time to read his story.
